A Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, LVN, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Medical Doctor or other supervisory staff at long-term care facilities and hospitals. A CNA provides assistance to patients with daily living tasks and is responsible for basic care services such as bed making, grooming, and measuring vital signs ( temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure).

You can become a CNA by completing a combined 160 hours of theory (60 hours) and clinical training (100 hours) program at an accredited vocational schools. The program varies from 4-weeks accelerated programs to10 weeks weekend programs.

When you complete your clinical training, you will take the competency exam. The exam is administered by an independent testing organization authorized by the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and is given in two parts. The first part is a multiple-choice examination. The second part is a practical exam where you show the evaluator your skills.
